EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) today announced that the Virginia Military Institute will rejoin men’s lacrosse as an associate member beginning in 2022-23, voted on by the MAAC Council of Presidents and unanimously approved on March 25.
VMI’s lacrosse program has competed in the Southern Conference for the past eight seasons.
“The MAAC membership welcomes back VMI to the men’s lacrosse league,” said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “In a time of conference realignment, the MAAC is committed to assisting schools seeking to maintain access to the NCAA Championship AQ and providing a high level of competition for student-athletes.”
VMI previously competed in the MAAC from 2003-13 and enjoyed much success, advancing to the 2008 MAAC Tournament title game against Canisius. The Keydets advanced to the title match after defeating Providence by a 9-8 count in overtime in the semifinals.
“VMI is excited to be rejoining the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the sport of lacrosse,” said VMI Deputy Athletic Director Lenny Brown. “We appreciate Commissioner Ensor’s effort in having VMI return to the conference and providing a home for the sport. This move enhances our partnership with the conference where we are currently competing in women’s water polo. VMI has enjoyed its growth in lacrosse while participating in the Southern Conference, and we look forward to continued growth, while rekindling some past rivalries, in the MAAC. “
VMI has faced three MAAC schools this season, including a close 14-10 loss at Manhattan on February 16, a 9-8 overtime loss to St. Louis. Bonaventure at home on February 26 and an 11-6 loss at Monmouth on March 15.
“We are excited as a program to be rejoining the MAAC,” said the VMI head coach James Purpura. “I want to thank MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor and the rest of the MAAC leadership for welcoming VMI lacrosse back to the MAAC. Current MAAC men’s lacrosse members include St. Bonaventure, Monmouth, Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, Siena and Quinnipiac.
