Wolverines Roll to Conference Victories Over No. 21 Brown, Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team defeated CWPA opponents No. 21 Brown, 14-5, and Mount St. Mary’s, 18-2, on Sunday (March 20) at ARCC Swimming Pool to finish up a perfect three-game weekend.
Lola Ciruli and Maddie O’Reilly led the Wolverines (16-7, 4-0 CWPA) in scoring on the day with five goals apiece, and Maddy Steere chipped in four, all against Brown. Alex Brown collected 11 saves on the day and allowed only two goals in two halves of play.
Game 1: # 7 Michigan 14, # 21 Brown 5
In the first game of the day, Sofie Pontré got the Wolverines on the board first just two minutes into the first quarter to go up 1-0 on the Bears. Kayla Barone and Elise Walker both tacked one apiece to lead 3-0 heading into the second quarter.
O’Reilly scored within the first 30 seconds to put Michigan up 4-0. Throughout the rest of the first half, Barone, Steere and Ciruli each found the back of the net, putting Michigan up 7-2. Brown started between the pipes and collected five saves while allowing only two goals.
In the third quarter, Steere and O’Reilly both scored their second goals of the game, putting Michigan up 9-4.
In the final quarter of play, the Wolverines outscored the Bears 5-1. Steere scored twice while O’Reilly, Sammy Monroe and Sophie Tovani each chipped in a goal. Sophie Jackson collected five saves and allowed three goals.
Steere led the Wolverines with four goals, while O’Reilly collected yet another hat trick and Barone chipped in two goals. Brown and Jackson combined for 10 saves.
Game 2: # 7 Michigan 18, Mount St. Mary’s 2
Ciruli had four goals to lead UM against the host school in the second game. The Wolverines wasted no time in the first quarter, scoring six goals. Pontré got the scoring started followed by goals from Ava Morrant, Walker and O’Reilly. Ciruli found the back of the net twice before time expired in the first quarter, pushing Michigan to a 6-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Grace Harbaugh and Monroe both chipped in two goals in the second quarter. Brown collected six saves and allowed zero goals in the first half.
The scoring continued for Michigan in the third quarter as Steere, Harbaugh, Ciruli, Morrant and O’Reilly all found the back of the net. At the end of the third quarter, Michigan led The Mount 13-1.
Kasey Umlauf scored twice in the final quarter, while Ciruli collected her fourth goal of the game and Ashley O’Neill and Fiona Young scored one apiece. Jackson collected four saves and allowed two goals in the final half of play.
Michigan will host the University of California for Senior Day at 2 pm Friday (March 25) in Canham Natatorium.
