Water Polo Returns Home with Four Contests Over the Weekend

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women’s water polo team returns home to Kirk Pool for the La Salle Invitational this weekend where they will take on opponents Mercyhurst, Gannon and Salem.

The Explorers will face the Lakers first on Saturday, Mar. 12 at 9 am before facing Salem later that afternoon at 3 pm La Salle will face Gannon on Mar. 13 at 10 am before meeting Mercyhurst a second time at 1 pm The team will honor its four seniors prior to the contest against the Lakers on Sunday afternoon. All four contests will be streamed on YouTube Live.

SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:

  • La Salle enters the weekend following a five-game sweep out in California. The Explorers are currently 9-7 overall and are on a six-game hot streak.
  • Kalista Hyham continues to be an offensive force for the Explorers. Hyham recorded 20 goals, three assists and 23 points over the weekend to earn the MAAC’s Offensive Player of the Week title. She is currently averaging three goals per game and shooting at 56.3%.
  • Emma Gurasich earned the MAAC’s Defensive Player of the Week honor following her standout performance in California. The junior totaled 45 saves and 13 steals in the five contests. She currently has a .496 save percentage on the season.
  • As a team, the Explorers are averaging 11.8 goals and 9.6 steals per game. La Salle has gone 41-17 in sprints this season.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS:

  • Mercyhurst enters the contest at 2-8 coming to Philadelphia after losing the last four consecutive games. The Lakers are currently 1-2 when visiting their opponent.
  • Sakura Gavin leads the teams’ offensive effort with 16 points on 10 goals and six assists this season.
  • Ava Gebhardt and Sara Marin have also reached double-digit scoring on the season with 10 goals apiece.
  • Marley Ramon has protected the net for 216 minutes this season. She has made 129 saves in eight games.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS:

  • Salem enters the contest at 6-13 overall having lost its most recent contest against Michigan, 6-4. Four of the Tigers six wins have come in the last seven games.
  • Annefleur tan Bloemendal leads the offense for Salem with 72 points on 52 goals and 20 assists in 20 games.
  • Seven other Tigers have scored goals in double digits this season: Erin Zappia, Margherita Garibbo, Chloe Woodbine, Heather Lock, Courtney O’Saughness, Taeghen Hack and Madisyn Nye.
  • Phillippe Piper is 7-13 in the goal this season making a total of 224 saves for a .463 save percentage.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS:

  • Gannon enters the contest at 5-5 overall coming off a recent three-game win streak.
  • The Golden Knights held all three of its opponents to single digit scoring while totaling at least 17 goals in each contest.
  • The 20-8 victory against Washington and Jefferson marked the teams’ biggest margin of victory this season and the squad’s first 20-goal game.
  • Gannon has had a two-week hiatus since last playing. The team is 1-0 when visiting its opponent and 4-5 when playing in a neutral setting.
