ANN ARBOR, Mich.– The No. The 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team started the Wolverine Invitational 2-0 on the first day, defeating Iona (17-6) and Bucknell (14-4).
Lola Ciruli, Erin Neustrom, Elise Walker and Maddie O’Reilly all earned hat tricks on the day. Sophie Jackson recorded 15 saves over the two-game span, only allowing five goals.
Michigan will play its final two games of the tournament on Sunday (March 6) at 10:30 am against Saint Francis and against Salem at 3 pm
Game 1: No. 7 Michigan 17, Iona 6
Maddie O’Reilly got the Wolverines started with a goal in the first 23 seconds of the first quarter to go up 1-0. Not even a minute later Ava Morrant got in on the scoring action and Erin Neustrom was right behind Morrant with a goal of her own. After the first quarter, Michigan was up 4-0 on the Geals.
In the second quarter, it took Kata Utassy just under two minutes to score adding to the Wolverines’ lead. Throughout the second quarter, Michigan would go on to score three more goals to end the first half up 8-2 over Iona.
Lola Ciruli took over in the fourth quarter scoring a career-high three goals, earning a hat trick. Kasey Umlauf scored the final two goals for the wolverines and O’Reilly chipped in one goal to defeat the Geals 17-6.
Ciruli was the star against Iona earning a hat trick on five shots in the fourth quarter alone and recording two steals. Sofie PontréEnvironment, Elise WalkerO’Reilly and Utassy all chipped in two goals as well.
Sophie Jackson only allowed two goals and had six saves on the day.
Game 2: No. 7 Michigan 14, Bucknell 4
Michigan carried over its momentum from the first game, scoring four goals in the first quarter. Ava Morrant was the first to score, just 52 seconds in. Neustrom, Walker and O’Reilly tacked on the other three goals to go up on the Bison, 4-0.
In the second quarter, Walker scored two more goals earning a hat trick to help the Wolverines lead 8-3 heading into the second half.
Seven Wolverines scored in the second half of the game including O’Reilly and Neustrom, who both earned hat tricks. Morrant, Ciruli, and Maddy Steere all tacked on a goal to boast Michigan over Bucknell, 14-4.
Michigan shot 50 percent scoring 14 goals on 28 attempts. Sophie Jackson shined in the first half of the game only allowing three goals and adding nine saves. Alex Brown was a brick wall in the second half only allowing one goal, which came in the third quarter.
Erin Neustrom, Elise Walker and Maddie O’Reilly all earned hat tricks against the Bison scoring nine of Michigan’s 14 goals.
