Former Local Prep Water Polo Stars Shine in UC Irvine-UCSB Women’s Game | Sports

It was like a local high school all-star alumni game when UCSB and UC Irvine met in a Big West women’s water polo opener on Saturday at Campus Pool.

The visiting Anteaters got three goals from Dos Pueblos alum Toni Shackelford and nine saves from former Santa Barbara High standout goalie Faith Tedesco and beat the Gauchos 16-8.

Sarah Owens, a former San Marcos High standout, scored three goals for the Gauchos.

Also seeing action in the game was Juju Martinez do Amaral (Santa Barbara High) for UCSB, and Sabina Shackelford (Dos Pueblos) for UC Irvine. San Marcos alums Piper Smith and Chloe Spievak weren’t available to play for Irvine.

Caitlyn Snyder scored four goals to lead UCSB (10-8, 0-1).

Tara Prentice got the Anteaters (13-4, 1-0) off to a fast start, scoring two of her game-high five goals in the first two minutes.

Snyder got the Gauchos (10-8, 0-1) on the board, but the Anteaters answered with three goals though to take a 5-1.

Owens put away her first of three goals on the day to make it 5-2. However, UCI’s defense continued to clamp down and the visitors scored another three unanswered.

The Gauchos cut the lead to 8-4 on goals from Snyder and Nina Munson.

Snyder scored on a counter attack to make it 9-5.

Unfortunately for the Gauchos, the comeback effort was cut short as Prentice ignited a four-goal UCI run to take a 14-6 lead.
